Baer Crossey McDemus Welcomes Carl Ronald as a Partner, Bolsters Burgeoning IP Practice and Adds Patent Expertise

(PHILADELPHIA, PA – April 9, 2018)  Baer Crossey McDemus LLC, a Philadelphia- and Pittsburgh-based law firm, is excited to welcome Carl Ronald to the firm as a Partner in the firm’s expanding Pittsburgh office. Carl brings to the firm over twenty years of experience advising clients on how best to protect their ideas, inventions, brands, and artistic creations in both the U.S. and foreign countries. He also provides advice on freedom to operate, issues of potential infringement, and white space analyses.

Carl also had significant expertise in dispute resolution, having resolved issues in Federal and State Courts, as well as alternative dispute resolution mechanisms such as arbitrations and mediations. He has also engaged in appellate work when necessary to protect a client’s interests, arguing cases before Federal Courts of Appeals, as well as orally presenting client cases before the Patent Trial and Appeal Board in Alexandria, Virginia.

Having served as general counsel for a technology startup and as a solo practitioner, Carl understands the needs and expectations of his clients. As part of a past representation, Carl worked on-site with a client two days per week over a two year period for a medical robotics company where he interfaced directly with the engineering and software teams to source, vet, and file patent applications to build their IP portfolio around their semi-robotic surgical bone shaver. In addition to robotics expertise, Carl has successfully overcome statutory subject matter rejections in many software-based patent applications, as well as prosecuting applications in the mechano-chemical, nano-particle, cybersecurity, construction component, digital pathology, oxygen mask, sports equipment, and alternative fuel systems arts, among others.

Carl has also been actively involved in Pittsburgh’s start-up scene throughout his legal career, dating back to his own startup company. The connections he made while looking for funding blossomed into business relationships and friendships that continue to this day. He continues to volunteer his time and expertise screening and vetting the IP portfolios of funding candidates for a local angel investment group.

Carl obtained his Juris Doctor from Duquesne University School of Law, and a Bachelor of Science degree from Boston University.  He is currently admitted to practice in Pennsylvania and before the United States Patent and Trademark Office.

“Carl and I have long shared an interest in and commitment to supporting Pittsburgh’s innovation communities, and I am thrilled to have him join the Pittsburgh office as we look to expand and enhance our offerings to technology and entrepreneurial clients in the region,” said Justine Kasznica, a Partner and head of Pittsburgh’s Baer Crossey McDemus office. “Carl’s unique blend of  substantive IP and business experience makes him an ideal addition to Baer Crossey McDemus’ growing team.”

As part of its growth strategy, Baer Crossey McDemus continues to seek opportunities to augment the firm’s legal products and service offerings and attract experienced talent with the combination of business and legal acumen to support innovative and growth-oriented clients.  The firm is committed to helping its clients, which range from pre-funded startups to Fortune 500 companies, build and protect value.  The addition of highly experienced subject matter experts in the venture capital, private equity and mergers and acquisitions areas who share the firm’s entrepreneurial vision will fuel its continued growth in the Philadelphia and Pittsburgh markets and its planned expansion into other technology hubs.
