Baer Crossey McDemus Welcomes Justine Kasznica as a Partner, adds Drone, Robotics and Space Practice

(PHILADELPHIA, PA – February 14, 2017)  Baer Crossey McDemus LLC, a Philadelphia- and Pittsburgh-based law firm, is excited to welcome Justine Kasznica to the firm as a Partner and the head of the firm’s expanded Pittsburgh office.  Justine brings to the firm extensive experience advising clients in technology transactions, including SaaS, IaaS and PaaS, software licensing, robotics, and IoT.  She advises domestic and international businesses on a broad range of privacy, network/data security compliance and risk management issues, including data transfers and information governance issues, and internal policies related to privacy and terms of service and use (with experience advising clients with respect to COPPA, FERPA, and HIPAA/HITECH compliance).  Justine also has significant expertise in general corporate and commercial law matters, and supports clients with their entity formation, corporate governance, venture capital and private equity investment, and commercial contracting needs.

Justine is launching the firm’s new commercial space, robotics and drone (unmanned aircraft systems – UAS) practice.  A recreational drone pilot with a passion for robots, space and aircraft, Justine represents commercial space, robotics and UAS companies nationwide in connection with their regulatory needs, and she also advises universities and large commercial institutions with respect to their UAS operations. Justine regularly participates in speaking engagements across the country, writes articles and leads workshops on legal and regulatory topics related to UAS, robotics and commercial space, and serves as an advisor to various UAS, robotics and space technology companies and projects.

Justine has been actively involved in Pittsburgh’s innovation economy since she moved to Pittsburgh in 2008.   Among her other initiatives, she serves on the Board of Ascender (formerly the Thrill Mill), Pittsburgh’s newest co-working space and start/build hub, as well as on the Pittsburgh Venture Capital Association’s Emerging Leadership Board, and is a Councilmember of the Aeronautical and Space Law Section of the Pennsylvania Bar Association (Chair of the Space Law Committee).

Prior to joining Baer Crossey McDemus, Justine was a Special Counsel at Saul Ewing LLP, and before that she served as Executive Director of the University of Pittsburgh School of Law’s Innovation Practice Institute, and was the founding member of ReefBot, a collaborative partnership between Carnegie Mellon’s Robotic Institute, the Pittsburgh Zoo and PPG Aquarium to develop autonomous underwater vehicles for the purpose of oceanographic exploration and coral reef conservation.

Justine obtained her Juris Doctor from Rutgers School of Law (Dean’s Scholarship), where she also was a member of the Law Review.  Justine obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree from Yale University.  She is currently admitted to practice in Pennsylvania and New Jersey (inactive).

“Justine is a game-changer for us in a number of ways,” said Andrew Baer, a Co-Founder and Managing Partner of the firm. “She is a leader in Pittsburgh’s vibrant and rapidly evolving startup and technology ecosystem and is the ideal person to leverage the firm’s entrepreneurship-focused business model to grow our footprint there.   At the same time, her expertise and client base in the cutting-edge UAS, robotics and commercial space areas are nationally recognized and give our Technology and Data Privacy practice a truly unique capability among boutique firms.”

“We are very excited to add Justine to our growing Pittsburgh office,” said Chris McDemus, a Managing Partner of the firm, “and even more excited that her presence also expands the expertise of our practice into new frontiers (no pun intended).”  “Justine has the entrepreneurial edge, as well as the level of pragmatism, that we require in new hires and that is incredibly difficult to find.  I am very excited to watch the ways in which she grows our presence and brand in the Pittsburgh market.”

As part of its growth strategy, Baer Crossey McDemus continues to seek opportunities to augment the firm’s legal products and service offerings and attract experienced talent with the combination of business and legal acumen to support innovative and growth-oriented clients.  The firm is committed to helping its clients, which range from pre-funded startups to Fortune 500 companies, build and protect value.  The addition of highly experienced subject matter experts in the venture capital, private equity and mergers and acquisitions areas who share the firm’s entrepreneurial vision will fuel its continued growth in the Philadelphia and Pittsburgh markets and its planned expansion into other technology hubs.
