(PHILADELPHIA, PA – December 1, 2016) Baer Crossey McDemus LLC, a Philadelphia- and Pittsburgh-based law firm, is excited to welcome Jay Gantz to the firm as a Partner. Jay brings to the firm extensive experience advising clients on technology, privacy and intellectual property matters, including negotiating sourcing, distribution, e-commerce and strategic partnership agreements, and providing transactional and counseling support through all aspects of developing, operating and monetizing websites, mobile applications and IoT platforms. Jay also has significant expertise in counseling clients on compliance with privacy laws and best practices (including drafting customer-facing terms and conditions, and implementing COPPA and VPPA compliance programs) and on fair use and other technology- and content-related IP issues, as well as implementing open source use and contribution compliance programs. Previously, Jay was an Assistant General Counsel at Comcast Cable, and before that he was one of three attorneys embedded within Comcast Interactive Media, a newly-created standalone company dedicated to developing and executing Comcast’s interactive media strategy. Prior to joining Comcast, Jay was an associate in the Intellectual Property practice group at Dechert LLP. Jay obtained his Juris Doctor from Rutgers School of Law (with high honors), where he also was a member of the Law Review. Jay obtained a Bachelor of Science degree in computer science from Rutgers College. He is currently admitted to practice in Pennsylvania and New Jersey and before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.
“I’ve known Jay for some time, and the day he joined us was one of my proudest moments at the firm,” said Andrew Baer, a Co-Founder and Managing Partner of the firm. “Jay is one of the leading technology lawyers in the mid-Atlantic region, and he brings incredible sophistication and prestige to our technology practice, which will be a huge help as we expand to other tech centers and serve larger clients with more specialized needs. At the same time, as an engineer and coder, he also has an infectious enthusiasm for innovation and a highly entrepreneurial and business-savvy approach to counseling clients, whether they’re Fortune 500 companies or pre-funded startups. With Jay’s help, our goal is to build a national technology law practice with the cost advantages of a boutique Philadelphia and Pittsburgh rate structure.”
“It’s no easy task finding a New York- or Silicon Valley-quality technology lawyer in the Philadelphia area,” said Chris McDemus, a Managing Partner of the firm, “but we found that person in Jay. He rounds out the incredible technology and data privacy group that we’ve been building and brings the qualities that we demand of a senior lawyer – large firm experience and significant in-house/business side experience.”
As part of its growth strategy, Baer Crossey McDemus continues to seek opportunities to augment the firm’s legal products and service offerings and attract experienced talent with the combination of business and legal acumen to support innovative and growth-oriented clients. The firm is committed to helping its clients, which range from pre-funded startups to Fortune 500 companies, build and protect value. The addition of highly experienced subject matter experts in the venture capital, private equity and mergers and acquisitions areas who share the firm’s entrepreneurial vision will fuel its continued growth in the Philadelphia and Pittsburgh markets and its planned expansion into other technology hubs.
